I've been looking to get one of these Newall Technology, but even the chinese version costs $250+shipping.
Looking at the picture makes me think that this is a resolver (of sorts) so the question is: Can a handfull of bearing balls, a tube, few coils and some c-programming be used to get position feedback? Accuracy of +/-1mm would be very satisfying for this particular need.
